An Uplifters' outing highlight is the spirited horseshoe pitching contest under the chairmanship of Dr. Frank F. Barham on September 25, 1937. The photo shows entrants in the contest. The name of the society came from that first meeting at the Athletic Club in 1913. That night showmen put on a rousing bill of entertainment and then asked: "How about you laymen doing your bit." Harry Haldeman answered with a laugh, "Laymen entertain? These birds are just the uplift--the social uplift and some of you show guys need uplifting." Thus the club was born.
