Description
An early wireless radio station antenna set up at the Look Out station on the top of Mt. Hood, Oregon, August 1919, with National Radio Wireless Company transmission equipment. One of four photographs (date and identification on back). Telephone engineer C. M. Allen of the US Forest Service and W. W. Hanscom oversaw installation of the National Radio Wireless sets on Mt. Hood. The first wireless information regarding forest fires was transmitted from Mt. Hood (fire district 6) on August 9, 1919, a week earlier than similar messages sent in Montana. The equipment was dismantled moved from the peak to the Mt. Hood postoffice with the onset of winter. (See Portland Oregon Journal, August 28, 1919).
