Description
Materials consist of a poem with box and tri-fold binder. Letter is attributed to Edmund Kean and, according to the binder, describes his experiences with Ophelia Benjamin, a woman with whom he lived on the Isle of Bute. The poem shows Kean's appreciation of her love but complains of her desire for luxury. Poem contains the watermark of "Fbaisler London Paper 1829." Manuscript is stained, contains second handwritten notations, and is in fragile condition. Poem is encased in a tri-fold binder with a book plate and short description. Book plate contains the name of Herbert Brenon and the Latin phrases "Amicitia sine fraude" and "ex libris." They translate into English as "friendship without deceit" and "from the library of." Book plate also attributes J. H. Nash as imprinter and W. Wilke as designer. Description on right side of binder contains information on the poem, box, and binder. The box allows the binder to slide in when folded. Box contains a decorative book binding with title, author, and "original mss."
