"The Taj from river, Agra. 1078." Exterior view of the Taj Mahal next to the Yamuna River, local people are visible along the bank. The wall enclosing the complex is clearly visible as is the Mosque sitting behind the Taj Mahal next to the west wall. The symmetry of the design is clearly visible. The Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Arjumand Banu Begam (d.1631), and incorporates several buildings and a large garden. It represents the apex of Mughal architecture and combines influences from Persian and Indian design. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership.
