Photograph caption date stamped September 2, 1961 reads, "April Stephens, 9, 7308 Wilbur Ave., Reseda, at left, guns her engine while racing around the track as a member of the Panorama City Quarter Midget Racing Association. Winner last year in national modified class competition--the Las Vegas Race of Champions, Nevada--Miss Stephens now speeds in the B Class, top division for dirt track racers, at an average of 35 m.p.h. Racing since 1959, Miss Stephens has won a total of 264 trophies. In the second photo, Mrs. Hubert Stephens helps her daughter, April, unfasten the safety belt. Miss Stephens and her father, photo at right, fix the car engine. Miss Stephens is one of 60 members, 5 to 16 years of age, who race Tuesday and Friday evenings on a dirt track at Oxnard Boulevard, near Noble avenue, Van Nuys."
