Photograph was edited for publication purposes Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004. Photograph caption dated May 21, 1964 reads "Senatorial candidates took the Valley by storm yesterday. Salinger covered seven meetings." Salinger is shown outdoors, talking to students at Valley College in Van Nuys. Salinger was campaigning for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.
