Description
Members of the 7th California Volunteers line up in front of the Copeland Building, the location of the old armory at 8th and Spring streets, before departing for San Francisco. Expecting to go oversees, these men never left the state in the end. These volunteers were trained at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro. The fort, named in honor of Lt. Gen. Arthur MacArthur, the father of General Douglas MacArthur, was commissioned as a U.S. Army fort in 1914, and served as a training center during World War I. It was in service until 1974, and was decommissioned in 1976 after which it was declared a surplus.
