Description
This recording is the oral earthquake history of Ken Chandler who was a Caltrans Landscape Lead Worker at the Caltrans Telegraph Maintenance Station. At the time of the earthquake, he was outside his home in Vallejo watching his children play. After the earthquake, he tried to report to the nearest Caltrans Maintenance Station, which was on Broadway, and then he was told to report to the nearest Maintenance Station in District 4, where they told him to be on standby at home due to bad traffic and the next day he was to report to Telegraph Maintenance Station. Once he arrived at the Telegraph Yard, he was sent to San Leandro to work on a bridge inspection team on Highways 980, 24 and 13. If there was an aftershock, the teams would have to re-inspect areas afterwards. After the inspections were done, where Chandler had to take inventory of the trucks that Caltrans was hauling loads for the contractors, and after that assignment was over he was a member on the closer crew, which places cones, signs and area warnings for road closures.
