Alexander begins the interview discussing that he wrote the book to examine our changing relationship with the past and preservation via a number of different angles, from language and memory to material culture and globalization. For the majority of the interview, Connie and Alexander discuss a number of the chapters in his book on The Future of Past. For example, Alexander discusses how his experience working as a free-lance journalist in Italy lead to his appreciation for the memory and politics of preservation. In addition, he talks about how we can preserve the past of material objects, like the Sphinx or a Shinto temple, and what that preservation means for the culture and the future of the past in an increasingly globalized world. Alexander and Connie end the interview discussing the modern Egyptian rebuilding of the library at Alexandria and its implications for Egyptian culture and the politics of the past.
