Description
The Valley to Vietnam series, produced by Sacramento Public Library, traces the arc of experience of Vietnam era veterans living in the Sacramento, California area. From modest beginnings in Coalinga and San Francisco's Chinatown to the United States Marine Corps to a long career as a Sacramento-based attorney, Jerry Chong presents a compelling story of hard work, patriotic sacrifice, and professional success. As a member of Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, we see Chong's involvement in Vietnam as both a squad leader and the leader of a killer team (Codename: Snoopy). His tour involved near-constant patrolling and ambushes, from arrival to departure. Notable is February 13, 1968, when his reinforced squad of 18 Marines ran into a battalion-sized force of both North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. This outstanding interview was conducted by Vietnam-era veteran and Green Beret Bob Tribe.
