Description
This 1928 photograph shows the Travelers Hotel resting at the southwest corner of Fifth and J Streets. Built in 1913/14 by the Ransome Concrete Company for a cost of 525,000 dollars, the six-story-high hotel was regarded as state of the art; automatic water faucets, bedside reading lamps, bathtubs, instant ice-water, four layer carpeting “to obliterate the hardness of the concrete floors” were a few of the choice amenities. Its manager, James Flanagan, was a direct protégé of William Land, and claims to have arrived in Sacramento in 1886 broke, working his way into the highest circles of the hospitality industry. The hotel opened on the evening of May 16, 1914, to considerable fanfare with 400 guests, complimentary lemonade, and with the emcee duties going to D.W. Carmichael. Flanagan was also met with a round of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In the same year that this photograph was taken, Sacramento’s Marsh Investment Company sold the hotel to a Bay Area investor for 360,000 dollars.
