Description
Loyalist mural, Shankill Parade, West Belfast, 2002. Mural commemorates life of Oliver Cromwell, 'Born 1599, Died 1658, Lieutenant General, Lord Protector of the Protestant Faith'. Cromwell is a Protestant hero for his role as staunch defender of the true faith and his conquest of rebellious Catholic Ireland in 1649-1652. Mural shows four of Cromwell's New Model Army (roundheads) putting to death a Catholic (cavalier) rebel. Two side panels read: (left) 'Catholicism is more than a religion. It is a Political Power therefore I’m led to believe there will be no peace in Ireland until the Catholic Church is Crushed - Oliver Cromwell', and (right) 'Our Clergy persecuted and our Protestant churches desecrated. Also our Protestant people slaughtered in their thousands - Oliver Cromwell'.
