The Valley Times sponsored contest started on Flag Day, June 14, 1964, at the corner of Parthenia Street and Van Nuys Boulevard, Panorama City, in a Hughes Market parking lot. Robert LeMaire ascended forty feet up a flagpole to a specially built platform where he remained for 36 days before climbing back down on July 20, 1964. Photograph caption dated July 7, 1964 reads, "Two teen-age boys envied our flagpole sitter's lofty perch, decided to join him. They looked the situation over, went home, constructed a rope ladder, hauled it back to the pole. Amiable Bob LeMaire cooperated, hooked one end to his platform and watched the boys expend some of their youthful energy. Bob Shelton, 17, steadies the ladder and Bruce Hobson, 16, climbs up. But LeMaire hollered Halt! before the boys could do much more than get the idea off the ground. He didn't want anybody falling and getting hurt."
