The three buildings of the Lick Observatory sit atop Mount Hamilton in the left background of the image, with the large dome of the telescopic refractor at the right of the group. An unpaved road winds through the foreground to the observatory, passing the low, clabpboard buildings that sit amidst the vegetation on the fore-and centergrounds.
