Photograph was edited for publication purposes. The Wayside Honor Rancho was renamed The Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center in 1983. Photograph caption dated September 14, 1959 reads "Cells give way to dormitories. Experiment at rancho is dormitories, right (pictured), instead of cells for maximum security prisoners. Cells are reserved only for hard to handle prisoners. Officials say dormitories give prisoners better outlook, are cheaper to build than cell blocks. Although built for 60 prisoners, prison crowding made it necessary to put 85 to dormitory. Despite numbers, no serious trouble has developed, officials say. Similar experiment is being conducted in few eastern prisons." The prison is at 29310 The Old Road in Castaic. See images 00154656 through 00154664 for all photos in this series.
