Description
Title supplied by cataloger.; Originally from the Luther A. Ingersoll Historical Collection.
The Pomona area is situated along a trade route used by Native Americans, and is said to have been first inhabited by the Gabrieleno Native Americans. In the 1700s this valley was known as Rancho San Jose´, and at some point it became part of Missio´n San Gabriel. On April 1837, Don Ignacio Palomares and Don Ricardo Vejar were granted the rights to this 22,000-acre tract of land by then-Mexican Governor, Juan Bautista Alvarado. In the 1870s, the arrival of the railroad and Coachella Valley water spurred agriculture, allowing vineyards to flourish, and supplying the winemaking and raisin industries. On January 6, 1888, Pomona - named after the ancient Roman goddess of fruit - was incorporated as a City, and in 1911 it became a charter City. In the 1890s, citrus orchards and olive groves replaced the once-lush vineyards and the city quickly became an economic leader in the citrus industry. The city has grown steadily through the years: in 1890 it had a population of 3,634 residents; fifty years later (1940) it had skyrocketed to 23,539; fifty years after that (1990), it was at 131,723; and currently (2009) it's estimated at having 163,000 residents. Today, Pomona is the fifth-largest city in Los Angeles County. Notable residents have included: (Actors) Jessica Alba, Trevor Wright; (Artists) Kevin Stewart-Magee, Millard Sheets; (Athletes/Coaches) Alberto Davila, Bob Seagren, Bruce Hines, Dan McGwire, Delanie Walker, Hamza Abdullah, Husain Abdullah, Mark McGwire, Randy Stein, Rich Yett, Richie Sandoval, Ron English, "Sugar" Shane Mosley; (Authors) Jerry E. Smith, Jim Chandler, Jim Keith, Richard Armour; (Computer Scientist) Robert Tarjan; (Industrialist) Will Keith Kellogg; (Musicians/Singers/Rappers) Above the Law, Jeanne Black, Kokane, Rozz Williams, Suga Free, and Tom Waits to name a few.
Stunning view along a wide, dirt road lined with Eucalyptus trees as far as the eye can see. This road is located somewhere on the Richard Ranch property, in North Pomona.
