Photograph caption dated June 5, 1947 reads, "Battleground - This is a reproduction of a map in evidence before Judge Arthur L. Bartlett in Superior Court. It shows the "critical area" in which John D. Gregg was granted a permit by city council to mine rock and gravel on 115 acres in Roscoe. Residents of Roscoe are fighting to restrain the operation on the ground that council's action was unconstitutional and could be repeated anywhere in San Fernando Valley if the Gregg permit is sustained. The map shows the "critical area" or proposed pit, almost in the center of the community of homes, schools, churches nad [sic] public buildings, some of them operated by the city of Los Angeles. Black squares designate homes."
