Description
Beyond the bamboo lattice of a folding screen sit three women: the flute / yokobue player (in nearly full view) accompanies shamisen and koto musicians (who are hidden by the partition). The delicate wave patterns in silver on the screen panels create a languid quiet mood, which is further emphasized by the soft gray shading of the background. The enforced separation of the print viewer from 2 of the performers gives a wistful quality to the print - that much of Edo culture is now gone from view to the 20th century observer. Only the design on the flutist's kimono of colorful maple leaves amid frothy waves gives a bright note to an otherwise subdued image.
