Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the earthquake Alex Woolworth was a Highway Landscape Specialist in San Luis Obispo, Caltrans district five. Herb Fillipponi was Woolworth's supervisor and a Senior Engineer in Operations. Right after the earthquake Woolworth helped coordinate the maintenance crews that assisted in the repair efforts in the Bay Area. Fillipponi describes how they worked on two contracts one on Highway 129 and culvert repairs due to earthquake damage in Monterey County. He also describes how Caltrans worked with the State Department of Housing, the Office of Emergency Services, Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA] to grade land for earthquake victims who lost their homes in Pajaro and Hollister for FEMA trailers.
