Photograph of a great cave-in at the mine run by Free Gold Mining Company, Hedges (later Tumco), Imperial County, (at the Colorado River), 1905. Viewed from above ground, a large sinkhole over the collapsed mine dominates the image. Several wooden timbers lay on the opening to a shaft in the foreground. The buildings of the mining operation with smokestack are visible in the background. The surrounding terrain is hilly, rocky and barren.
