Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Kathryn McDonald was a deputy public defender for the city of Los Angeles. She was one of the chief defense attorneys in the Onion Field Murders in which Gregory Powell and Jimmy Lee Smith were tried in the killing of a Los Angeles police officer in 1963. Photograph caption dated October 3, 1955 reads "The city's only woman deputy public defender."
