Description
From the Charles Henry Geer photo album series that depicts a promotion held to sell land in Turlock, California, circa 1907. With the advent of irrigation water, people eagerly purchased the twenty to forty acre subdivisions from the land holdings of John W. Mitchell, the founder of Turlock. Extensive advertising in newspapers, especially in the Midwestern states, entice people to travel to Turlock. This photgraph shows a large group of potential buyers who have arrived by train. Some of the people gather around a buggy with a flat shade top, parked next to the railroad station. A man faces the group and appears to be talking to them. Two men are leaning out the window of the train engine to watch.
