Description
Rochester Hotel, begun in 1887 by builder Major E.A. Warner and designed by local architect C.B. Bradshaw, located on the southwest corner of West Chapman Avenue and South Lemon Street, in Orange, California. Hand-colored postcard shows corner view taken from the Plaza looking southwest of three-story brick building and corner tower. After failure of tourist industry, the building was sold in 1889 to Rev. J.H. Harwood and converted into the Orange County Collegiate Institute, the county's first college, which operated from 1889-1891. It operated as a hotel until it was raized in June, 1931, on the current site of the Orange Post Office which opened in 1935. Postcard printed in upper right corner with red text, "Hotel Rochester, Orange, Cal. / Best Hotel between / Los Angeles and San Diego." Reverse of postcard printed with logo for Newman Post Card Co. and graphic for "Vanornum Colorprint" as well as "Pub. by Souvenir Publishing Co. / Los Angeles. San Francisco."
