Description
The flag of Vanuatu was first hoisted on July 30, 1980. Green represents the lush and fertile lands of the islands; red symbolizes blood and freedom, and the black triangle signifies both the rich soil and the Melanesian people who originally settled the islands. The yellow horizontal Y shape represents the light of Christianity flowing through the archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. The emblem in the black triangle is a boar's tusk, a symbol of prosperity sometimes worn as a pendent by ni-Vanuatu men, encircling two namele leaves, a token of peace. Contemporary cultural variety has made the new country one of the most attractive tourist destinations of the South Pacific.
