Scope/Content: Manuscript annotations in printed book.
Scope/Content: Manuscript annotations in a copy of William Nicholson's A plain but full exposition of the catechism of the Church of England, likely by "Lewis," a 17th- (or early 18th-) century owner. Annotations, sometimes very lengthy, are written in a transitional hand throughout the volume. There are also numerous inscription from 2 members of the Chambers family who owned the book in the 1760s and 1770s.
Condition: Bound in contemporary calf with some 19th century repairs to hinges; "WC" cut into front and back covers of volume.

Front free endpaper: "This book was bought from the study of Mr. Hickes, Ror. of Broughton" in 18th century hand; "William Chambers his book gave to him by his father, May the 30th 1763 price 4d." On title page: "Lewis" in same 18th century hand as on front free endpaper. Rear paste-down endpaper: "Richard Chambers his book Janary 1 1764" and "Richard Chambers 1773 January 25"; "John Brown died Janury:26:1811, Jils Brown died January:18:18:16 thay:war:both:belong:to:Chalford," possibly written in intentionally antique-looking capitals. Additional inscription by William Chambers dated 1763 on rear free endpaper. "WC" cut into the front and back covers of the volumes.
