Photograph of a guard (center) patrolling a park (possibly Bixby Park) in Long Beach following the earthquake that struck the area on March 10, 1933. He is dressed in a uniform with a gun slung over his left should. He stands in the middle of a wide, tree-lined walkway with his back to camera. A small child stands ahead of him on the right and walks towards him. A man walks down the left side of the walkway in the distance. A wheelbarrow is parked at right next to a shed that extends out of frame.
Text from negative sleeve: 642. Long Beach. Earthquake March 17, 1933. The day or two after the terrible earth quake at Compton and Long Beach we drove down to see the damage. At Compton we found the Police Court in this oil station. See the sign on the building reading "Police Court." The sign in Bixby Park, Long Beach. Guards on duty in the park. The emergency kitchens in the park. 4 negatives
