Mary has her hands behind her back. Elizabeth looks off to the left and Frances has a feather in her hair. There are cottages in the background and utility poles with wires throughout. Mary A. West (Mary Adelbert Teel West Shepard) was H. H. West's first wife and the mother of Elizabeth and Frances. Maude Hamilton went on to marry H. H. West's brother, Guy West.
