Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Per the negative sleeve caption, this photograph was taken around 1910, the same year that Chester Schmitz was born. He looks considerably older than that, maybe about 5 or 6, in this photograph. The other children also look older than what their age would be in 1910. It is more likely that this image was taken around 1915. Photograph, from left to right, of Frances West, Elizabeth West, Irene Schmitz and Chester Schmitz posing while standing near the surf at Venice beach. The children stand in a row and all look to the camera. The girls are standing together at left and Chester stands separate from them at right. The shoreline stretches behind them at an upward angle from low right towards the left. A small wave laps onto shore behind them. Beachgoers wade in the water in the distance at right. The ocean stretches towards the horizon. Text from negative sleeve: 1328. Venice, Calif. About 1910. Mildred Ave cottages. 1. L to R: Elizabeth West.
