West sits at center on a low, stone parapet. He dons a souvenir cap and looks down towards his hands which hold feed. Behind him and at a lower elevation, the Oregon Caves Chateau stands at left and in partial view. A road passes to the right of the Chateau. To the right of the road, a pine-covered hillside rises in the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1619. Yellowstone trip, 1942. Thursday, July 2, 1942. 1. Oregon Caves. Mertie West feeding the chipmunks. 2. H.H.West feeding chipmunks. Left my hat at the lunch room at Cave Junction and was told to get a cap to wear in the caves so as to protect my head from water and bumps of low hanging rocks. Got a souvenir cap at the entrance. 3. Visitors drinking at the water fountain at the entrance. 4. Smith River. Father mentions it. 5. A big redwood stump at Crescent City cut for auto to go thru.
