A poorly lit or developed photograph of the front of The Empress Hotel in Victoria, as viewed from the street. The Châteauesque hotel stands in the distance at center and extends beyond the left and right frames. A sidewalk stretches along the bottom edge and a walkway leads up to the ivy-covered arcade and porch. A woman and child at left walk with their backs to the camera as they approach the hotel. Atop the veranda, a British flag flies from a flagpole. Ivy covers the entire front of the building as it stretches upward. Windows for 5-stories are visible on the front of the building above the porch. A balcony stretches across the front of the dormers at top. The dormers appear to be cut off.
