Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of H. H. West posing beside the southern face of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. A wide terrace between sets of stairs spans the width of the bottom edge and stretches back on a slight angle to the left. H. H. West stands in the near distance, left-of-center, and looks to the camera. Behind him, the marble, neoclassical Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands. It is viewed from its southern face and stretches out-of-frame to the left. Three laurel wreaths are carved in relief on the side of the tomb. They are spaced and framed by 4 pilasters. Metal chains and posts surround the monument. A few other visitors mill about the terrace. One man stands in the near distance along the right edge with his back to the camera. A group of 3 people stand at the far end of the terrace at center. Trees line the background, cascading downward to the right. Text from negative sleeve: 2371.
