Description
Scope/Content: An oral history with Lori Whalen, the Assistant Director of the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Whalen is responsible for many programs at the Environmental Nature Center and in the interview she discusses some of the changes to the programs due to the pandemic. Whalen grew up inland in Pasadena, but her family would often visit the Newport Beach area for vacations. In the interview, Lori describes how these trips ultimately led her to this career path. She shares some of her precious memories at 19th Street Beach, from building sandcastles with friends, nearly drowning in the Bay, to a painful run in with a surfer. Despite growing up far from the beach, Whalen describes the impact it had on her life and how her interests have changed over time. She talks about her current relationship with the beach, especially Huntington, as she lived there and would bike there from time to time.
