Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Bruce Ward was an Acting Superintendent for Caltrans based out of Santa Maria in District 5 at the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. For this interview Bruce recalled his experience with the earthquake and how he had been requested to lead a group of District 5 personnel to assist in earthquake relief and repairs in District 4. His work as a Supervisor was to oversee the removal of rockslides and repairs on the asphalt on State Highway Route 152 near Gilroy and Watsonville. Bruce emphasized the importance of the Caltrans maintenance personnel in their work ethic despite weather conditions, lack of electricity and access to communications in the areas severely affected by earthquake damage.
