Description

The Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture is a two-year community college in Woodland Hills, California. It opened in September 1947, with 70 students and 18 faculty members and is part of the Los Angeles Community College District. The school's initial focus was crop cultivation and animal husbandry, and still retains a large swatch of open fields for hands-on working farm training. In 1956 the school was renamed Los Angeles Pierce College.
Photograph caption dated January 21, 1963 reads, "Calves and cows hold the attention of second graders from Encino Elementary School as they take advantage of science program of tours and demonstrations at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. 'City kids' don't often get a chance to hang on a rail fence and meditate the wonders of a little calf. It's a real treat to (left to right) Paula Feldman, Debbie Most, Roxanne Labree, Sage Davidson, Toni Wilkins, Rhonda Rosen, Ivan Yamamura and Dee Talcove. At right, Julie Woodward can hardly believe that her milk comes from THAT, as Janet Harris (left) enlightens her friend. Matt Parker (right) enjoys the conversation. Tours of Pierce facilities have been reduced because of lack of funds resulting from defeat of June bond issue."; See image #00135833 for additional photo in this series.
