In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Captain Gill was a Captain of the Richmond to San Francisco Ferry service that was established after the Loma Prieta earthquake. In this interview he shares his personal experiences with the service. At the time of the earthquake, there was no ferry service between Richmond and San Francisco. There was public support to continue the service after the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge opened, but at that time the efforts were not successful to continue the service.
