Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph caption dated April 4, 1956 reads, "Pierce Junior College's sensational broad jump champion, Ernie Shelby, demonstrates how it's done during recent workout at Canoga Park High. Shelby has a lead of 24 feet, 9 1/2 inches which is regarded, unofficially, as the best outdoor mark in the nation so far this year. He is the junior college champion and just won the Santa Barbara Relays with a better mark than posted by the collegiate winner. He is shown (1) starting down the runway; (2) just as he takes off; (3) sailing through space (note how high he gets) [pictured], and (4) Boom! The landing. Shelby also runs the sprints and low hurdles for the Pierce Brahmas." See images 00162422 through 00162424 for all photos in this series.
