Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. Crowd scene at Doyle's Arena, as Hayden Phytian defeats Earl Little. In the early part of the 20th Century, the city of Vernon was a sports hot-bed. The Vernon Tigers of the Pacific Coast League played baseball there, while promoter Jack Doyle held the top fights at his outdoor arena. This photograph shows the second incarnation--the indoors arena--that burned down in 1927. Doyle later helped to build the Olympic Auditorium. Photo dated: July 23, 1927.
