The Oakwood Hotel was built by Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin in 1889, alongside the Santa Fe Railway tracks in Arcadia. It was a great showplace, a magnet for horse race enthusiasts, the wealthy and the elite. It burned down in 1911. Baldwin had suffered a similar loss years earlier when his hotel burned in San Francisco. He lost $3,000,000 that time.
