Photograph snipe dated November 4, 1968 reads, "Photo taken in 1918 shows Sgt. Louis M. Van Iersels, Dutch immigrant who joined the American Army and was at one time considered a spy, in uniform with medals, which made him one of the most decorated American veterans from World War I."
