Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated January 21, 1963 partially reads, "David Gerber, an 11-year-old Van Nuys sixth-grader who flies airplanes and plays a cello, sat up in bed and pointed to a plaster cast that stretches from his hip to his toes. 'I broke and dislocated my ankle when I made my first crash landing two days after Christmas,' said the student pilot-musician who comes from a family of cellists, not fliers. David's first air accident happened at a friend's home Dec. 27. He was seated on a wooden swing, gradually gaining momentum as he swung higher and higher when one of the chains holding up the swing snapped. David fell clumsily to earth. Before the fall, David had been in the air six-and-a-half hours - in a Cessna 150, a one-engine plane. He has been taking flying lessons since last January from a pilot training school at Van Nuys Airport."
