The manuscript contains two orderly books. The first covers the time period from June 20, 1775 to October 16, 1776, and comprises orders issued by William Moultrie during his command of the defense of Sullivan's Island. Also included are orders issued by Christopher Gadsen, and Robert Howe, then Colonel of the 2nd Regiment of North Carolina. The second part of the manuscript covers the period from April 15, 1779 to February 12, 1780 and consists of orders issued by William Moultrie and Benjamin Lincoln during Lincoln's operations on the Southern theater. Also included is a list of "General officers of the American Army, Dec. 15, 1780" and Moultrie's note on his aides. William Moultrie (1730-1805), American revolutionary general. As Colonel of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, he led a raid on an encampment of escaped slaves on Sullivan's island in December 1775, and in June of next year successfully repelled an attack of the British on the fort. On September 16, 1776, Congress named Moultrie Brigadier General, and on Sept. 20, 1776 his unit was taken into the service of the Continental Army. Moultrie took part in Lincoln's operations in the Southern theater, including the defense of Charleston and battle at Stono Ferry. He was taken prisoner during Clinton's Charleston Expedition of 1780.
