Bust-length portrait.
Born in Salem, Mass. in 1832 to James Rice and Susan (Manfield) Buffum. Came to California in 1850 by way of the Isthymus where joined brother working as postmaster in Stockton. Worked at gold mining, in 1859; went to Los Angeles where worked as merchant (part of firm Campbell & Buffum). From 1873-1889 located in Prescott, Arizona, returning to Los Angeles in 1889. In Los Angeles, active in real estate, street railroad systems. Died in 1905.
