Description
Constructed 1887. Located near 221-277 S Myrtle. "Accompanying picture shows the W.G. Spence and A Stedman blocks. They are situated on Myrtle avenue north of the City Hall. The upper floor of the Spence block is occupied by Dr. Kellogg-Lane, and Dr. C.S. Lane, dentist, where they have finely fitted offices. The lower floor is occupied by St. Luke's Mission (Episcopalian), and Briggs &:Co.'s lemon-curing establishment. The Stedman block contains the Masonic Hall upstairs, and the Opera House on the ground floor. The Masons are very comfortably situated, for in addition to a pleasant and well appointed lodge room, they have a banquet hall, with kitchen attached. The Opera House Company has recently fitted up on the ground floor a public hall having a seating capacity of six hundred, with a commodious stage, and dressing rooms, and several changes of scenery." Monrovia Messenger Souvenir Edition 1897. The Opera House had a stage and sets. Photos of the 'Deestrict School' production and Pirates of Penzance were taken there. Both blocks were demolished in the 1908's to make way for the CitiBank building.
