Description
This view of Western States Grocery Company's main office, at 1701 Third Street, was captured on March 1, 1937. Painted on the building is signage listing a list of all of the branch offices in the western states, and the words "From Alaska to Mexico" and "Cash and Carry Dept. and City Desk."
The Western States Grocery Company, an Oakland based wholesaler, purchased this property from Lindley & Company in 1928 and quickly began expansion of the site's warehouse facilities. They expanded the building further in 1932 to accommodate the hiring of more office workers. By 1939, Western State Grocery Company was a subsidiary of Safeway Stores Inc. and operated as a wholesaler for independent grocery stores. The Bert McDowell Company absorbed the Western States Grocery Company and its assets in 1942.
