Description
The riverboat "Fort Sutter" is the subject of this circa 1920 postcard. The 1,200 ton vessel was built in 1912 for the California Transportation Company as a duplicate of her sister ship, Capital City. Its interior was adorned with mahogany, birch, and white cedar, and all state rooms were accommodated with hot and cold running water. Insofar as safety, its hull was built with nine different water tight compartments, while the vessel was fit with an automatic fire sprinkling system. The ship was christened by Miss Eva Lowry as an award for writing the best essay on the following theme: "Fort Sutter - Its Significance in the West Trend of Civilization." She also won 50 dollars.
