Connie and Luis begin the interview discussing Luis’s time growing up in South Central and East Los Angeles, and his experience with drugs, gangs, and difficulties with authority. They proceed to talk about his marriage and children, their effect on his life then, and experiencing his son joining gangs before moving on to discuss Luis’s background and his love for books. Connie and Luis then discuss Luis’s pursuit of journalism and his time spent at UC Berkeley before moving back to Southern California and becoming a crime reporter. They move on to talk about his addictions to alcohol and heroin and how he overcame them before considering Luis’s trip to El Salvador to study gang activity, his current marriage, and his healing through Native American traditions. Connie has Luis read a passage from the book, and they consider Luis’s son’s recovery. Connie closes the interview requesting an autograph for her copy of the book.
