El Retiro School for Girls was a boarding school for girls who were wards of the Los Angeles County court system. It opened in 1919 and closed in 1961. The school was located at Polk Street and Borden Avenue, now a part of the Sylmar Recreation Center. Photograph caption dated July 12, 1955 reads, "El Retiro School - In relaxed setting of El Retiro grounds, girls are given education through high school level. Operated under county superintendent of schools, the educational program is geared to meet individual needs of the girls."; See images #00142949 through #00142951 for all photos in this series.
