Description
Original program notes: Talking Drum | Chris Brown and DJ eddie DEF | Sun May 23 1999 Composer Chris Brown and an ensemble of Bay Area musicians will take guests on an acoustic exploration of a historic military bunker in an outdoor performance of Talking Drum at Battery Wallace in the Marin Headlands. Talking Drum is an interactive electronic sound piece in which musicians play a network of four small computer music systems installed outdoors. The computer instruments run rhythm-generating software and are positioned to exploit distance and resonance effects at the performance site. Hence, the environment itself is played like the membrane of a drum. Bay Area turntable legend, DJ eddie DEF will be a featured soloist with the ensemble. Chris Brown is a composer, pianist and electronic musician whose music explores the intersection of composition, improvisation and electronics. Trained as a classical pianist, Brown is a renowned inventor of personal electronic instruments. His recent works involve extending Network Music into new performance venues. DJ eddie DEF has been spinning records since age 12 and is a cofounder of the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters, the first scratch crew in the Bay Area. After recording the pioneering scratch record Hamster Breaks, they released a double vinyl album under the band name, the Space Travelers.
