The talks will introduce the public to a broad range of ideas from the fields of art, anthropology, literature, philosophy, and science. The series will explore the underlying natural, cultural, and social factors that have framed the Bay Area. Speakers will address changes in attitudes and recommend action to preserve the quality of life in the Bay Area. The Tended Earth | Thurs March 8 1990 | Wes Jackson and Ann Hamilton Wes Jackson, Director of the Land Institute and artist Ann Hamilton will speak about ethical approaches to the land and their work. For the past twelve years, Wes has been investigating sustainable alternatives to agriculture, energy, waste management, and shelter through The Land Institute. He will contrast the equilibrium of the tended earth maintained by Native Americans for millennia with the intrusive mentality with which western expansion has frequently destroyed our ultimate resource, the land. Trained as a geneticist, Wes has incorporated a wide range of influences into the development of The Land Institute. Ann Hamilton, an artist who is currently renovating the Center’s Mess Hall, will discuss the ethic of tending and participation which informs the development of her work. Her installations utilize materials that are emblematic of both human and natural centered systems. She has recently developed major installations for the Temporary Contemporary in Los Angeles, the New Museum and the Whitney Museum in New York and San Francisco’s Capp Street Project. Ann will be living and working at the Center throughout 1990.
