Jerry Rabow discusses his book, “50 Jewish Messiahs.” He begins by explaining that few people know that there have been more than fifty Jewish Messiahs. These individuals inspired messianic fervor that sometimes permeated whole Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and even secular worlds. He stresses that the stories of these Messiahs, which he says are both male and female, are virtually unknown because they have either been suppressed by Jewish religious authorities or ignored by historians of all religions. Rabow goes on to share stories of several of the fifty Messiahs. He tells of the Messiah who killed a Pope, one who was saved from the Inquisition when a different Pope hid him in the Vatican, the 17th century Messiah whose followers continued their secret society into the 20th century, and also the story of the Messiah who insisted that his head be cut off to demonstrate his immortality.
